A wooden wave for the Picnic

This striking timber structure inspired by a crashing wave will be facing festival goers at Electric Picnic in two weeks, and is the result of a collaboration between Shay O’Neill, Barry Dorgan and Eugene Boyle of WoodCollective. The team’s experimental wooden installations at last year’s event made quite an impact.

“This is not just architecture,” says project coordinator Eugene Boyle. He is an architect/designer who is passionate about multi-disciplinary approaches to wood. His team includes sculptors, artists and mathematicians.

“It is form. It creates a place with a particular sort of atmosphere for a multi-generational audience. It’s about promoting sustainable materials and healthy buildings.”

WoodCollective’s thought-provoking structures have already been exhibited in Bergen, Norway twice and last year’s illuminated installations at the festival became a social hub and focal point. “Ideas are valuable currency,” says Boyle. “This is all about ideas, education, perception and creation”.
