My Bike and I

What attracted you to motorbikes? My father has always been a big motorsports fan. Watching the Isle of Man TT or the World superbikes with him used to amaze me, especially at how Joey Dunlop or Mick Doohan could throw a bike around at such amazing speeds. I was totally inspired, but my father had a major bike crash before I was born (he was married on crutches), so I wasn't allowed to have a bike while living at home. Then a few years ago, as my financial situation allowed, I was able to get an unrestricted A provisional licence.

What did your family think? I knew they were worried but they've actually been very supportive.

Your first bike? A Yamaha YZF R6 - a big machine for a first bike, but it's been really good to me. I even passed my test on it.

How much did it cost? I bought it privately from a guy in Maynooth for £7,200. It was absolutely mint, a year old with 3,500 miles.

Insurance problems? No, but it was very expensive . . . £1,150 for third-party first time around. It stayed the same in the second year. Since I turned 30 I've been upgraded on my policy to TPFT at minimum extra cost. These are outrageous premiums which I don't believe I could continue with. More competition or a change in legislation wouldn't go amiss.

What do you use your bike for? Initially it was for dry day and weekend use only - I also have a car. However, with traffic in Dublin and surrounding towns so ridiculous, I've decided to sell my car and use my bike full-time.

What do you spend on gear? A fair bit over the past couple of years including an Arai Quantum F Helmet (€440), a Dianese all-weather jacket (€599), Dianese all-weather gloves (€100), Richa leather gloves (€85), Richa leather jacket and trousers (£400), Richa all-weather trousers (£110) and a Vemar Helmet (£300).

Your next bike? With so many new 600s coming out next year, it's very hard to decide whether I'll stay with a 600 or move up. Many a review will have to be read in the new year, although it probably will end up being a Yamaha YZF R1. Whether it will be new or used will depend on finances.

Your longest journey? To Ennistimon, Co Clare, for a weekend in November 2001 with the Dublin Motorcycle Club. I'm hoping to travel across Europe with my girlfriend in the next couple of years if we can take the time off work.

Ever had an accident? No, there's been a few close calls but I've been very lucky.

What would you change about the laws on motorcycling? With the arrival of bus corridors there's a glimmer of hope for motorcyclists, if our Government, like many of its European counterparts, allows access to bikes as well.

Are motorcyclists respected by car drivers? A resounding NO - but then I don't feel Irish drivers have much respect for each other.

Who annoys you most? People who think juggling between a mobile phone, cigarette, steering wheel and concentrating on the road is normal driving. Has juggling at speed become part of the driving test?
