Land Rover apparently has plans to introduce a fourth model to its Discovery family.

As with the Range Rover, the Discovery is about to grow from a single model into a entire line-up of vehicles, starting this week with the reveal of the Discovery Vision concept at the New York Motor Show.

The first two models will be compact five- and seven- seat family-sized cars to compete with the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Nissan X-Trail. The third will be a large, upmarket replacement for the current Discovery 4.

The fourth model could be a more rugged, mechanically simple car to compete with the Toyota Land Cruiser and Mitsubishi Pajero.

That car could either form the basis of a new Defender (still a contentious issue within Land Rover) or could replace the Defender line-up entirely.
