Frankfurt auto show: Volvo wows with new concept coupé

It wasn’t exactly a secret but the arrival of the Volvo Concept Coupe caused something of a stir at Frankfurt motor show, simply because it looks sto strikingly good.

Initial photos suggested that Volvo was merely creating its own iteratio of large coupés like the Audi A5 but the Volvo concept is incredibly striking and carries its own personality. It’s a real head turner.

The first Volvo to come from the sketchbook of its chief designer Thomas Ingenlath, it is underpinned by Volvo's new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, and powered by one of the firm's new Drive-E four-cylinder petrol engines mated to a hybrid system for performance equivalent to a V8.

It’s these underpinning which are actually meant to be the story, for they represent the foundations of the new XC90 due out next year. However, the look of the car, with its links to the P1800 of old means that many will be looking for the “Chinese-owned but still Swedish at heart” car firm to put something akin to this into production. Let’s hope the pressure works and we see it on our roads sometime soon...
