If ever there were a car whose time had come, it’s the Prius. Right now, the automotive world is in a froth as countries and cities prepare for a ban on cars that use only petrol or diesel, and the world and their dog are worried about emissions and tax changes.
Well, the Prius is the car (albeit not the only one…) that can future-proof your motoring. It passes the 2040 test already, and its ultra-low emissions (just 70g/km) means that you’re also proofed against pretty much any changes to the motor tax system in the next few years.
The better news is that, at long last, the Prius is as functionally good as its numbers look. You won’t get to the 90mpg promised in the brochure, but you’ll easily do 60-65mpg, even on the motorway. The new TNGA chassis means it’s pleasant (if not exactly exciting) to drive, and the beautifully-made cabin is a lovely place in which to while away a journey.
New plugin hybrid version gets you 50km on just the batteries, but it’s pricey. The styling will also put many off, but it’s all down to aero-efficiency.
