40 Lexus GS: Restyled hybrid delivers a refined drive

Recently restyled with much sharper fangs at the front (although still with a faintly disappointing whiff of Avensis around the rear), the GS, available as a hybrid model only, is a far better foil for the likes of a diesel 5 Series or E-Class than you might think. Certainly, the GS300h with its 2.5-litre four-cylinder + batteries version is exceptionally good. It delivers properly good long-range fuel economy, even on the motorway (not usually a hybrid strong point) while things such as the interior quality and comfort are absolutely top drawer. Handling tends to the soft, and it’s not as rewarding to drive as a BMW, but it’s far more refined. The huge new central infotainment screen looks impressive, but the graphics and software are disappointingly old-fashioned as is the mouse-style controller. The 3.5-litre V6 GS450h is rather more thrust-ful but rather thirsty for a hybrid, which surely misses the point. Reliability should be more or less unstoppable in the long term.
