39: Audi Q2 – As good as it gets in the world of overpriced premium baby crossovers

Audi’s smallest SUV has the whiff of the marketing department about it, and is clearly an attempt to sell a pint-pot at quart prices, especially once you try to squeeze and adult into the back, or any luggage into the boot.

It has the styling of a big, practical 4x4, but none of the space nor practicality. For all that, it’s rather hard not to allow the Q2 to work its charms upon you. It’s surprisingly engaging to drive, especially when equipped with the delightfully buzzy 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol turbo, and has surprisingly sharp, responsive steering.

Cabin quality and layout are both quite simply excellent (love the backlit dash panels), and the styling does rather grow on you, even if it lacks the natural elegance of, say, the A5 Sportback. It’s an awful long way from cheap, but for a car that was (clearly) built at the behest of the accountants rather than the engineers, it’s not half bad.
