26 Lexus IS300h: Perfect first step on the electric car ladder

An old-school hybrid that achieves better-than-decent fuel economy

We’re plunging headlong towards an electric car revolution right now, but many are afraid or nervous to take the plunge into full battery car ownership. Charging worries and range anxiety mean that fully electric driving is beyond the ability of many with which to cope.

Here then is a perfect first step on the ladder, at least for those shopping in the premium car market. The IS300h is simplicity itself – it’s an old-school hybrid (no plug, no cables), achieves better-than-decent fuel economy, is spirited to drive, is beautifully made and, as long as you buy into Lexus’ sharp-edged styling, it’s pretty handsome too. Its low Co2 emissions means it’s a solid company car choice and Swiss watches look enviously at Lexus when it comes to reliability. Drawbacks? The rear seats could be roomier, the boot bigger and it’s not cheap, but it’s a useful alternative to the diesel German norm.
