Waterways sails back to the 1970s to bring a touch of retro chic

THE LIVINGROOM at The Waterways heralds a return to the simple luxuries of the 1970s and a nod to recession chic

THE LIVINGROOM at The Waterways heralds a return to the simple luxuries of the 1970s and a nod to recession chic. Interior designer Liz LaCumber (01-640 4876 or www.lizlacumber.com) says the look was inspired by simpler times and is a fresh take on the 1970s, with its mix of vintage and charity shop pieces and contemporary furniture and wallpaper.

We became used to everything in show apartments being new and expensive during the boom, she says, but a limited budget can inspire a more creative interior.

One of the more expensive items in the room is the bespoke Rue Cambon Sofa in opium silver, designed by LaCumber, which has a metallic linen finish inspired by the disco era. It costs €1,800 (plus VAT). The Casa dining table costs €539 from Instore (1890 252508) and the transparent Tobias chairs from Ikea cost £53.83 each (€58.68).

What would a 1970s space be without shag pile? The Jab Milo rug (€290) can be ordered through LaCumber Interiors as can the silver curtains from the Boyle Butler Grimaldi Collection at €26 per metre.

The lamp is an original 1970s from Wildchild Originals (087 2386143) and costs €275.

LaCumber filled the house with reminders of a bygone age, like the Sodastream in the kitchen, the jar of 1970s sweets and the Oxfam dresser. She says these pieces jolt people back to a time when “we didn’t expect so much”. The Rolling Stones images are from Gallery 23 (01-823 7100) and cost €120 each.
