SANDYCOVE: €895,000:SENATOR AND former Progressive Democrats TD Fiona O'Malley is selling her Dublin home, a Victorian villa by the sea in Sandycove, Co Dublin.
Sherry FitzGerald is asking €895,000 for the four-bedroom semi-detached house which O’Malley has owned since 2002 when she paid over €955,000 for it at auction. Called Seaspray, the house at Sandycove Point is an authentic seaside home, a two-minute stroll from the Forty Foot and Sandycove Beach. Closer still is a sheltered rocky cove with a slipway leading out to sea. This was built by the council at the urging of a well known local feminist, Mrs Waugh, as a female bathing point, in protest at the Forty Foot being an all-male venue.
Seaspray is hidden from the road by high walls and exuberant shrubbery. It’s a handsome double fronted house with steps leading up to the front door, from where there are wonderful views across the next door neighbour’s garden to the shore.
The back garden has separate access through garage doors, with space for a boat or a car.
Inside, it’s clear that the 186sq m (2,000sq ft) house needs extensive refurbishment, and that was part of its charm when O’Malley bought it. She had planned to renovate it in an eco-friendly style, but new owners will probably start from scratch. It’s got a flexible layout with a pretty sittingroom leading off the main hallway and two bedrooms at the upper level. Downstairs, there are two further bedrooms, a kitchen, study and a second livingroom that’s warmed by a wood-burning stove.
