Denville, a semi-detached five-bedroom property, has been home to Julieanne Hogan and her family for the past 11 years. The house has been extended three times in the past decade – overseen by architect Aoife Tuomey. "It bears no resemblance to the house we bought," says Julieanne of the property, which now extends to 242sq m.

The first extension removed an old kitchen and snug, replaced by a spacious open-plan kitchen-cum-living area incorporating an informal dining space. The entire back of the property is flooded with light, thanks to its south-facing aspect and wall of glass which opens out on to an al fresco granite dining space.

“One of the problems was the amount of heat generated by the glass” says Julieanne. “We installed a remote-controlled awning and electric blinds to counteract this.” The bonus of this passive heating and solar panels on the roof give the property an energy rating of B3.

The kitchen was designed by Robinson Interiors and, although 10 years old, it feels brand new as it was given a new lease of life in 2015 when it was hand-painted in a muted green. With a mixture of walnut and granite counter-tops, all the appliances are high end – Miele, Siemens and a six-ring Britannia Stove.

A formal dining and drawing room sit to the front of the house and link into the extension through French doors. Lying opposite is a playroom which houses all the toys for the family’s five children.

The utility – also part of an extension – has been very carefully thought out and includes a special drying press and individual units to sort out the mundane task of separating the washing and ironing for a family of seven.
