Built in the 1890s, Shandon is a lovingly modernised three-bed terraced home

A terraced Victorian house on the edge of the Burnaby in Greystones, Co Wicklow, has been given a complete makeover in recent years: now, with its must-have mix of mostly original period details and modern kitchen and bathrooms, it's in walk-in condition.

A short walk from Greystones village centre and the Dart station, Shandon on Killincarrig Road could suit either a small family or someone downsizing from one of the Burnaby's grander homes.

This 191sq m (2,056sq ft), three-bedroom terraced house, built in the 1890s, is for sale through Sherry FitzGerald for €875,000.

Shandon’s current owners had planned to settle here after lives spent as expatriates. Many years living in places such as Turkey, Africa and the Middle East is reflected in the house’s décor: oriental rugs decorate original timber floors stained a dark oak colour throughout the house.

Three years after buying the house, however, the owners are moving on again to live closer to children abroad.

Double reception

A tiled front porch opens into the front hall. To the right are interconnecting reception rooms with matching black fireplaces, deep coving and picture rails. There are two tall windows in the drawingroom at the front of the house and custom-built units on either side of the fireplace. Double doors open into the formal diningroom at the back.

A door with a stained-glass panel at the end of the hall opens into a vestibule area, with a guest shower-room on one side and a pantry-cum-utility cupboard with a dryer on the other. The vestibule, like the kitchen and conservatory beyond, is floored with cream Travertine tiles.

The compact, thoroughly modern kitchen has marble countertops, cream kitchen units, a gas hob inset into the chimney space, a double dishwasher and big American fridge. There’s a dining area next to the marble-topped island unit.

Back garden

Double doors open from here into a conservatory. This in turn opens into a small landscaped back yard, where steps lead up to a rear entrance on to a road running down to the main street.

Upstairs, four bedrooms were turned into three when two at the front became one wide, bright main bedroom, with two tall windows and two cream-painted original fireplaces. One of the other two doubles is currently handsomely fitted out as a study/TV room.
