Views from on high in Dalkey

Built in 2001 with a design that suits its sloping site, this large family house on the popular Knocknacree Road has views of the village roof tops and looks out its many picture windows all the way to the sea

A modern house with a traditional style close to Dalkey village has many good features – but most of all, its view. The house, built into the side of a hill high above Dublin Bay, looks out over the rooftops of houses spilling down the hill towards the coast and far over the bay to Howth.

It’s lovely by day and night, says the agent, when lights dot the hillside below.

Dubay, a detached 312sq m (3,360sq ft) four-bedroom house, built on three levels in 2001 on Knocknacree Road, is for sale for €2.25 million through Sherry FitzGerald.

Near the top of Knocknacree Road, close to the corner with Ardbrugh Road, its entrance slopes steeply down the hill.

A landscaped shrubbery screens the front door, which opens into a bright double-height entrance hall with oak floors that run through most of the house.

Balcony

Double doors from here open into the livingroom, where a wide picture window takes full advantage of the view, as do floor-to-ceiling windows in the adjacent diningroom. This is connected to the livingroom by French doors.

Both have period-style marble fireplaces, recessed lighting and coal-effect gas fires. French doors open from the diningroom onto a timber balcony.

There's a matching timber balcony off the kitchen, on the other side of the drawingroom. This room, accessed from the entrance hall, has a vaulted ceiling with skylights, polished granite countertops, Maple kitchen units, Miele hob and ovens and a Marmoleum floor. The sink is at the window to take advantage of the view.

Downstairs, there’s a good-sized utility room with a Miele washer and dryer, fridge freezer and an airing cupboard which houses the central vacuum system.

Views

The main bedroom suite takes up the entire top floor. It has a fully tiled en suite shower-room and his-and-hers dressingrooms. The window in the main bedroom is relatively small, given that it enjoys the same dramatic views as the drawingroom.

Most of the rest of the living quarters are downstairs, at ground-floor level. A family room at one end of the hall opens onto an outside patio. Two bedrooms have built-in wardrobes, fitted desks and en suite shower-rooms and a fourth room, used as a study, has a Murphy bed.

There’s lots of good storage in Dubay – there’s a good-sized cupboard in the downstairs hall as well as a shelved store room/boot room.

The landscaped and very private back garden has an unusual circular lawn edged with brick, and steps leading around it down to a secret patio area. At the front, there is parking for up to five cars. A steep pedestrian lane beside Dubay provides a shortcut leading towards Dalkey Dart station.
