A Victorian house in an elegant crescent of two-storey-over-basement homes high on a hill in Cobh, Co Cork, has sweeping views over the town to Cobh harbour. Number 1 The Crescent on Spy Hill in Cobh is a six-bedroom 234sq m (2,520sq ft) house, which has been one family's home for the past 50 to 60 years, and is now for sale through agent Johanna Murphy for €550,000.

The 13 houses in the bow-shaped crescent were built in the 1850s and 1860s for the elite of the area: all have small, private gardens with gates into a larger communal garden that sweeps down towards the harbour. Number 1, an end-of-terrace house, also has a good-sized private garden to the side.

Period details

The house is in need of substantial refurbishment, but it retains many of its original period details, such as marble fireplaces and sash windows. One of the two main reception rooms has a tall bow window, and both rooms have excellent sea views, as do bedrooms at the front of the house on the floor above. Windows in the gable end look across to Cobh Cathedral.

Accommodation includes two reception rooms on the first floor as well as a kitchen and bathroom, with four bedrooms on the second, top floor.

The basement is a warren of rooms – including two bedrooms – but it has potential to be redeveloped to accommodate a modern open-plan kitchen/diningroom/sittingroom arrangement. Alternatively, it could be used as separate accommodation – it has direct access to the private garden.
