The enduring appeal of Victorian houses with their period features intact, but renovated to include modern comforts, is apparent. So a terraced redbrick on the edge of Dalkey village, upgraded about 20 years ago, is bound to attract interest.

Number 44 Ulverton Road, Dalkey, Co Dublin, a two-storey three-bed with 188sq m (2,023sq ft) of space, is for sale through agent Vincent Finnegan for €1.2 million. One of a terrace of four houses built in 1886, it's a short walk from the village's main street. Ulverton Road is the final stretch of the busy Dún Laoghaire to Dalkey road.

Owners Jackie and David Flynn have lived here for 39 years and have maintained it in meticulous condition. The long front hall of number 44 is painted taupe below the dado rail and cream above. The elaborate intact plasterwork and ceiling centre rose are picked out in the same contrasting shades.

The drawingroom on the left also features elaborate plasterwork, a tall deep bay window and a large marble fireplace; folding double doors in a wide arch open from here into the diningroom, with a more modest cast-iron fireplace and less elaborate cornicing.

Narrower double doors lead from the diningroom into the kitchen. The modern kitchen/breakfastroom with tiled floor was a major part of the refurb carried out 20 years ago. The breakfastroom at the end of the front hall is divided from the kitchen by a wide arch. With its old pine dresser and cast-iron fireplace, the room has a period feel; the long narrow kitchen, with its white units, polished black countertop and three Veluxes adding brightness is modern by contrast. Glazed double doors open from here into the small rear garden which is mainly a patio edged by a narrow border, with just enough room for two cars. Electronic gates open on to a wide laneway off Church Road – Churchill Mews, a small development built in the late 1990s is on the other side of the lane.

The half-tiled family bathroom on the first return is large, with a freestanding bath and double sink. Right next door is a separate tiled shower room.

Bedrooms

Eight steps lead up to two of the three bedrooms. The main bedroom stretches the width of the house, has two tall windows, a cast-iron fireplace and like the drawingroom below, elaborate cornicework. It’s a big room and new owners might want to install an en suite. The double bedroom next door, and the bedroom on the top return, up another short flight of stairs, both have mirror-fronted wardrobes.

The neat front garden has shrubs and a small patio space to sit in to catch the evening sun.
