HOOK HEAD €250,000:THE OLD Schoolhouse in Templetown, on the south side of Hook Head, is a smartly restored, four-bedroom, detached house that would make a great retirement spot or holiday home.

Templetown is called after the Knights Templar. The ruins of their church are still visible from the house. In the churchyard there is a gravestone with a cross and agnus dei or Lamb of God that is typical of a Templar grave.

The schoolhouse was bought by its present owners in 2001 for approximately IR£90,000 and has been completely refurbished. The detached property measures 186sq m (2,000sq ft) and has an asking price of €250,000 through New Ross-based agent PN O’Gorman.

ceiling storage cupboards leads into an open-plan living area with vaulted ceilings. This area has solid oak flooring. Wall-hung oak units flank the original fireplace where a slate shelf provides the perfect fireside perch.

There are two bedrooms off the living area; one double and a large vaulted single that is quite long. The owners have installed bunk beds in this room. There is also a bathroom. A spiral staircase, leads up to a mezzanine floor where there is a second sitting area and two double bedrooms and a bathroom. At night these rooms are illuminated by the flashing white strobe of Hook Head lighthouse.

An opening leads from the livingroom into the oak-veneered kitchen made locally in Clonmines Joinery in Wellingtonbridge. It has a slate floor and wood countertops. The oven and hob are both Neff. Off the kitchen is a laundry room with Bosch washing machine and drier.

Glazed French doors open into the wood-built conservatory. This is the dining room and it currently has some old-fashioned metal- frame school seats, a nod to the house’s past.

Two sets of French doors open out to the south-facing garden. A second building to the rear has been renovated and is used as an office. There are two more rooms here and a shower room – ideal for housing additional guests or family.

Just down the road is the Templars Inn, a family-friendly pub that also serves food – perfect if you don’t want to cook.

While the house doesn’t have sea views, Templetown beach is just a five-minute walk away. Dollar Bay and Booley Bay beaches are just a five- minute drive by car. Carnivan Beach is a 10-minute drive. So too is Fethard-on-Sea. The Ballyhack/Passage East car ferry to Waterford is a 15-minute drive.
