A suburban 1970s house in Killiney was completely renovated four years ago when the owner added a one-and-a-half-storey extension to the rear.
Number 1, Seafield Road, a 186sq m (2,000sq ft) four-bed, now has a large, bright open-plan kitchen/diningroom/family room with two glazed walls opening into the back garden. The renovation was done with flair, with features like oak parquet floors and the use of wainscoting.
Upstairs, the extension accommodates a large main bedroom with a walk-in dressingroom, en suite and a glass-walled balcony looking across the Dart line behind the house to the sea.

Actor and writer Anna Fox is now planning to build a new house in a plot of land beside her home and 1 Seafield Road is for sale for €950,000 through Vincent Finnegan.
The house, right on the bend of Seafield Road, which runs from Military Road to Killiney Hill Road, is about a 10-minute walk from Killiney Dart station and five to seven minutes’ walk from Holy Child secondary school in Killiney, she says.
The livingroom on the right of the front hall, a long room looking onto the front garden, has a fireplace with cast-iron inset and a large frosted glass sliding door opening into the kitchen/dining/family room. A dual aspect study on the left of the hall has a pale timber floor and built-in shelves.
Oak parquet floor
The hall – painted grey above white wainscoting – has an oak parquet floor which is continued in the large extension. A tall marble-topped island unit separates the kitchen from the dining/living space. The kitchen, from the Victorian Kitchen Company, has painted wooden units, white marble countertops, a Belfast sink and a Rangemaster cooker with an induction hob.
A chimneybreast with a solid fuel stove inset divides more floor-to-ceiling windows and doors: on the left of the room, bifold doors opening onto the deck fold completely back.
The gravelled rear garden has a raised timber deck, a pond and a footpath down to a Wendy house with a veranda – a “woman shed”, says Anna. Vertical railway sleepers form fencing, separating the garden from the plot of land where the new house is planned.
Upstairs are four bedrooms, two en suite, and a fully-tiled family bathroom. The main bedroom has a walk-in dressingroom and a smart en suite. It’s dual aspect and has French doors opening onto a balcony.
There’s room to park several cars in the gravelled front garden.
