Move over K-Pop. Gangnam Style has been dethroned by Grandmother Style, the new moniker for shabby chic, as christened by real estate blog Curbed LA and picked up by the Huffington Post.
The term has been used in a derogatory fashion to describe the interior of A-list actor Tom Hanks’s Pacific Palisades home, which he has put on the market for a cool $5.225 million.
By West Coast celebrity standards the property is low key. It features painted floors, wood beam ceilings, a limed oak kitchen and a distressed dresser in the dining room.
The grandma who inspired this decor must have been Italian as the entrance hall is a dramatic double- height space with Italianate columns, a domed, painted ceiling reminiscent of Renaissance frescoes, and the requisite chandelier, for even Hanks, whose home does not – shock, horror – have a pool, can’t resist a bit of bling.
The actor bought the house in 1988 for $1.9 million, the same year that he starred in the classic film Big, and married his wife, Rita Wilson (below).
