Going, going gone in Galway for €3.2 million

Renville House, a Georgian property set on 135 acre overlooking Galway Bay has been sold at auction for €3.2 million - €1.2 million over the guide price. The five-bedroom house is located just south of Oranmore village, close to Galway city centre, with extensive frontage onto the bay.

Four bidders chased the property, which has been in the same family since the 1960s. However, at least one potential bidder from the UK pulled out of the auction process citing Brexit as the reason.

Renville House, which was auctioned yesterday by Jordan Auctioneers was bought in trust by a solicitor.

The ivy-clad house which comes with a yard of traditional farm buildings had been expected to make around €2 million but its good location , and the fact that both house and land are in tip top condition, made it attractive to a wide range of bidders.

The house was built in the 1820s by the Blakes, one of so called Tribes of Galway. It was lived in by the family until right into the 20th century when it was sold to the Lydon family who were the sellers at auction yesterday.

Located close to Galway Bay and Country golf club, the house is surrounded by pastureland. An avenue a half-mile long winds its way through the grounds to the front door of the two-storey house which has a number of fine reception rooms at ground floor level.
