John Weldon Auctioneers, Cow's Lane, Temple Bar, Dublin 8, Tuesday June 12th, 2pm. Anyone for a tennis bracelet? And why are they called tennis bracelets, anyway? Answer: they aren't. On this side of the Atlantic we call them line bracelets. These single lines of diamonds have been circling slim and stylish wrists since the 1920s, but were christened "tennis bracelets" in the US after Christ Evert broke one during the US Open at Flushing Meadows in 1978, asked the umpire to stop the match until the bracelet was found – and went on to win.

At Weldon’s, a fine diamond line bracelet, weight of 7.50 carats, carries a guide price of €17,000-€22,000. Other highlights include a ruby and diamond necklace with 237 diamonds and 136 Burmese rubies, valued at €70,000 for insurance but carrying a guide price of €25,000-€30,000; a diamond single-stone ring with an estimated total of 2.70 carats, set with diamond shoulders of 0.30 carats (€17,000-€22,000); and a pair of antique diamond earrings (€8,500-€9,500).
