Irish women as seen by Lavery and Yeats

Paintings by Irish artists Sir John Lavery and Jack B Yeats at de Veres art auction next week depict starkly contrasting views of early
20th-century society.

The Palladian Bridge, Wilton by Lavery (€50,000-€70,000) dates from August 1920 and shows members of the aristocratic Herbert family enjoying a summer's day in their private park near Salisbury, England. They include Patricia Herbert, daughter of the 15th earl, later Viscountess Hambledon, dressed in salmon pink leaning against the balustrade, and Beatrix, Countess of Pembroke seated on the bench.

Ladies from a very different social milieu are the subject of The Sisters by Jack B Yeats (also €50,000-€70,000) which depicts two women with a donkey in the square of a Galway town at the end of the day.

The paintings are among 120 lots in de Veres Irish Art Auction which go on view tomorrow, Sunday, from 2pm at Thomas Prior Hall, Bewley’s Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, where the auction takes place on March 25th at 6pm.
