The late US Senator Edward Kennedy dabbled in art, and his paintings occasionally surface at auction. When he married for the second time in 1992, he presented his new wife Victoria Reggie with an oil painting he had made of Daffodils inspired by the Wordsworth poem.
One hundred prints of the painting were made and the couple presented one to their friend, Hollywood actress Lauren Bacall – who died last year, aged 89.
She was best-known for starring in 1940s films (including The Big Sleep) with Humphrey Bogart, her husband for 12 years. The print was among items from Bacall's estate auctioned by Bonhams in New York this week, where it made $7,500 (€7,000) – more than eight times its estimate.
The print of Daffodils is inscribed "Betty, You are the greatest, much love, Ted," and counter-inscribed by his wife: "To Betty, we hope that your heart, too, with pleasure fills and dances with the Daffodils, Vicki."
