Dragon-adorned mirror and Child of Prague among eclectic lots

Bayonets, bentwood chairs, statues of St Patrick and the Child of Prague are just a taste of the eclectic range on offer at the forthcoming RJ Keighery sale on Saturday, August 28th.

The auction of more than 500 lots can be viewed at its Waterford showrooms from August 16th in advance of the online sale.

Top lots include a large early gilt mirror (lot 400, €4,000–€6,000) that reaches almost three metres in height with dragons along the top which would make a statement piece in a large room, as would the two Waterford Crystal Adare C6 chandeliers (lots 500 and 501, €1,200–€1,500 each) that feature alongside a Murano glass chandelier (lot 494, €800–€1,200) and a French six branch model with a 100cm drop (lot 496, €400–€600).

Over 35 lots of chairs are listed, covering everything from 48 plastic stacking chairs (lot 553, €100–€200) and two smart Edwardian club inlaid seats (lot 443, €200–€300); to a pair of Parker Knoll wing chairs (lot 238, €40–€60) and a pair of profusely carved oak throne chairs which originally graced the halls of Kilkenny Castle (lot 276, €600–€900).

Despite office desks being as scarce as hens’ teeth for the past year due to most of us working from home, the auction has three large pedestal desks ranging in estimates from €300–€600.

It also has a good number of occasional tables ranging from €60 for mahogany side pieces all the way up to some really lovely card tables, the highlight of which is a Victorian rosewood model (lot 209, €600–€900).

Should you need one, the sale has two gun cabinets. Lot 8 is a modern metal unit where the guns are hidden out of sight and under lock and key (€80–€120) whereas lot 405 is an Edwardian single door cabinet with a glass front, from a time where firearms were proudly displayed (€150–€250).

As always, auctions held outside of Dublin are filled with the unusual and this sale will not disappoint.

There are numerous lots from the contents of a religious institution that include a statue of St Patrick (lot 534, €200–€400) and for those who are planning a wedding now – at which up to 100 guests can celebrate a happy couple’s nuptials, albeit without dancing or music – to help with the weather lot 539 is a Child of Prague set in a glass dome (€40–€60).

There are numerous oak seats and kneelers along with pews and crosses and the unusual oak x-frame altar could be repurposed into an unusual side or dining table (lot 546, €100–€200).

If you are in the market for a sleek silver coffee pot, lot 486 weighing 660g could be just the ticket (€400–€600) and somebody somewhere will be on the lookout for lot 338, which is a large painted bank of 40 drawers (€700–€1,000).

A trunk of Scottish vintage clothing is seeking €60–€120, and a leather saddle, lot 264, is listed with an €80–€120 estimate, while a set of navy and pink spot racing silks is expected to fetch €50–€80.
