Lot 807, a rare "Bonzo Bank" mechanical money box by Saalheimer & Strauss, 1920s Germany, sold for €8,500 – over four times the top estimate (€1,500-€2,000) [see pic]. Among other highlights: Lot 441, a Donegal carpet in a design attributed to Gavin Morton and GK Robinson €20,000 (€7,000-€11,000); Lot 640, an Edwardian silver épergne (an ornamental centrepiece for a dining table, typically used for holding fruit or flowers), made by silversmiths James Dixon & Sons in Sheffield in 1906, €10,000 (€6,000-€10,000); Lot 504, a large silver salver, weighing approximately 2,100g, in a fitted oak case, that belonged to Daniel O'Connell €5,500 (€5,000-€7,000); Lot 507, oil painting of Daniel O'Connell attributed to the artist Nicholas Joseph Crowley €2,200 (€2,000-€3,000); Lot 479, a 19th-century French "Soufleto" piano €1,300 (€800-€1,500); Lot 939A, a set of 60 coloured prints, The Enid Blyton Nature Plates, by the illustrator Eileen Soper €230 (€200-€300); Lot 333, an antique child's toilet-training armchair made of elm and ash €70 (€70-€90). Tuesday (November 7th) John Weldon Auctioneers, Cows' Lane, Temple Bar, Dublin 8. Auction of jewellery, silver, gold and collectibles. Some 62 per cent of lots sold. A 20th-century Irish silver canteen of cutlery, made in Dublin in 1996, with 12 place settings, total silver weight 7.5kg, in a fitted box, €4,000 (€3,500-€4,500); a US 20 dollar gold coin, 33.5 grams, dated 1927, €1,200 (€800-€1,200). Among the unsold was an RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) helmet with its original case, engraved Capt JP Sheehan – who was based in Dungarvan, Co Waterford – (€1,500-€2,500).
Monday (November 6th) Mullen's Laurel Park, Woodbrook, Bray, Co Wicklow. Lot 332, a pair of vintage Louis Vuitton suitcases €4,200 (€1,000-€1,500). Among the unsold were three lots of 19th-century Venetian painted wood "Blackamoor" figures that failed to reach their reserve price.
