MONARCH Properties has been refused planning permission by Drogheda Corporation to build a 50,000-square-foot shopping centre at Twenties Lane, Moneymore, on the northside of Drogheda. The corporation said the excessive size and scale of the development would materially contravene the development plan for the town. It also ruled that the new centre would create serious traffic congestion.

The development was to have included a Quinnsworth supermarket, nine shops and on-site parking for 350 cars.

Meanwhile, the corporation has sought more information on another application from Monarch for an eight-screen cinema complex, drive-in restaurant, cash and carry outlet and an enterprise centre at the North Road, Drogheda.

The development is earmarked for a former landfill site off the main Dublin-Belfast Road. The corporation has asked for evidence that the site is suitable for development. It has also sought further information on drainage and water mains layout.
