Around the Block: Danish design takes centre stage at DeVeres

Next week's Design Furniture and Irish Art auction by deVeres promises a visual extravaganza celebrating the very best of 20th century design. If the catalogue is anything to go by there will be plenty to whet the growing appetite for Danish mid-century furniture. The design aesthetic is straight from an episode of Mad Men and for people looking to furnish homes the estimates are a lot more accessible than for older furniture from grander periods.

Many of the Danish pieces date from the 1950s and 1960s where the "Design" ideal originally emerged. Highlights will include a rare pair of "Poet" sofas (€3,000-€5,000) by Finn Juhl, that were purchased in Denmark in 1950 by the current owner's parents and shipped back to Ireland. A striking Donna chair by Gaetano Pesce for B + B Italia designed to resemble a prehistoric female fertility figure with a ball attached to symbolise captivity features on the catalogue cover (€2,000-€3,000).

The auction will also carry about 40 lots of contemporary Irish Art including several larger canvases, such as Brian Bourke's East Manhattan diptych, John Shinnors Black Skirt Still Life and Felim Egan's Meridional.

Centrally located at deVeres new gallery space at 35 Kildare St, Dublin 2, viewing is from Friday, April 24th, until Tuesday, April 28th, at 6pm when the auction takes place in Buswells Hotel.
