Welcome to Get Swimming, brought to you by The Irish Times, in association with Swim Ireland. Over the next 12 weeks, our training programme will help you to build up your swimming stamina and confidence, so that you are able to swim a mile by April. If you are taking part in this programme, you should be able to swim at least two lengths of a 25m pool in some form and you need to be able to commit to swimming three times a week.

Let’s get going with Week 1.

This week we’re building our swimming distance from 500m to 650m in three sessions, mainly using front crawl and back crawl. In our video you’ll see demonstrations of bilateral breathing, push and glide, floating front and back and sculling.

Over the next 12 weeks, our training programme will help you to build up your swimming stamina and confidence, so that you are able to swim a mile by May
