Beauty Call: Get yourself protected from the sun

Even in the intermittent Irish sunshine, you need to be careful

The summer may not have got off to a brilliant start, with monsoon-style downpours and more showers per day than Labour politicians taking a fall in the local elections, but we must have hope in our hearts that the summer will take off soon.

Last summer was epic, and we ecstatically rushed outside to soak up it up while we could. The thing was, many of us forgot to put on any suncream because “Irish sun doesn’t count”. The amount of people who got burned to a crisp soon put a stop to that idea though.

The Irish Cancer Society is blue in the face from telling us we need to protect our pale Irish skin. Irish people have the highest rate of skin cancer in Europe and it is the most common type of cancer in Ireland. The popularity of sun holidays has caused the skin-cancer rate to soar – but even at home we need to be careful.

Many dermatologists agree that SPF30 is high enough for most adults in most situations, and picking a broad-spectrum cream (with both UVA and UVB coverage), using it generously and reapplying throughout the day should keep you shielded from the sun.

Anyone with sensitive skin should go straight for the kids’ ranges. These usually have products with the highest SPF possible (50+) and are formulated for baby-soft, delicate skin. Rosacea sufferers should always sunblock themselves at this level if there’s any chance of a shot of sunshine – anything less might result in hot-flushing misery.

So slap it on, stay protected and let’s keep everything crossed that we get a good summer this year.
