A Louis Vuitton shoe trunk – yours for just €50,000

Punitive charges for checked-in baggage on airlines means few 21st-century travellers can afford to dress stylishly on holidays. But during the golden age of travel in the early 20th century, the wealthy moved entire wardrobes to their resort destinations. A selection of vintage luggage, going under the hammer in Christie’s annual Ski Sale in London, evokes an era of luxury travel to the Swiss Alps.

Among the highlights is this Louis Vuitton leather-and-brass-bound canvas shoe trunk with a hinged lid and front opening panel revealing 30 individual shoe-storage drawers. The estimate is £30,000-£40,000 (€38,000-€51,000) and it's on view – alongside surprisingly valuable vintage travel posters – in Christie's South Kensington saleroom from today where the auction takes place next Thursday, January 22nd. christies.com
