Dublin’s Luas tram system has reopened after it was shut down as a result of power-supply issues earlier on Wednesday.

The operators of the tram network Transdev, confirmed that service on both the Red and Green lines resumed shortly before 9am following an outage that lasted almost two hours.

Commuters have been warned to expect delays as it will take some time before the systems get fully back on track.

When the network was down the Red Line services were only operating from Tallaght/Saggart to Smithfield with no trams running into the city centre.

Green Line services only operated from Brides Glen to St Stephen’s Green and there was no service from Broombridge to St Stephen’s Green.

The commuter chaos caused by the shutdown was exacerbated by heavy rain across the capital and coincided with the return to school for tens of thousands of children.

The operators of the service, Transdev, have apologised for any inconvenience caused.

The disruption comes on top of the recent closure of the Red Line between Connolly and The Point following a major fire in Dublin’s docklands.
