Man (20s) who drowned in Killarney river named locally

It is understood Padraig (Paudie) O’Rahilly may have got caught in a whirlpool in River Flesk

The man in his 20s who drowned in the River Flesk in Killarney yesterday has been named locally as Padraig (Paudie) O’Rahilly.

The accident at the rear of houses and a soccer pitch in the Woodlawn area of the town occurred around 3.30pm.

It is understood he may have got caught in a whirlpool in the river.

The alarm was raised by Mr O’Rahilly’s friend. Paramedics, the fire service and a doctor attended the scene. People from the soccer pitch also provided assistance.

Mr O’Rahilly, was is his late 20s and from Barraduff, east of Killarney. It is understood he worked in retail in Kanturk and then in Killarney and is one of three children.

A postmortem is due to take place.
