More than 500 people attended a vigil in Barefield, Co Clare on Sunday night in memory of the late Vanessa Whyte and her children, James and Sara.
The Clare native and the teenagers died following a shooting incident at their home outside Maguiresbridge, Co Fermanagh last Wednesday.
Barefield priest Fr Tom Fitzpatrick said Vanessa’s mother Mary and siblings Stephen, Ivor, Geraldine, Regina and Anita decided it would be difficult to attend the Mass, so were watching from home via an online stream.

He said those in attendance were praying for Ms Whyte and her children “in a special way” and wished to offer their support to her wider family.

“We are not here tonight because we have answers, we don’t, we couldn’t possibly have answers. We need a place to bring our sorrow, to bring our questions, to bring our anger, to bring our prayers,” Fr Fitzpatrick said.
“We come not to try and explain the awfulness of what has taken place, but to hold one another and to try and see a tiny morsel of hope at a time when that is not easy to do.”
The priest also paid tribute to a number of people who had travelled from Co Fermanagh to take part in the vigil.
“You are very specially welcomed here tonight.”

Speaking after the vigil, Mayor of Ennis Cllr Mary Howard said the events in Co Fermanagh had shocked the local community.
“It was an incredibly poignant night, incredibly sad,” she said.
“Everybody felt that they would love to take away some of the pain from the family. This is their worst nightmare, you could never expect something light this would come to a country townland like this.
“It really is heartbreaking and everyone’s heart is broken. Everybody is feeling the pain. Everyone is absolutely gutted.”
On Saturday, detectives from the PSNI’s major investigation team, who are carrying out the murder inquiry, appealed for information about the movements of a vehicle.
Det Chief Insp Neil McGuinness asked that anyone who saw a silver Mercedes saloon car being driven in the Clones Road area of Newtownbutler, or between Maguiresbridge and Newtownbutler, on Tuesday evening to come forward.
“Our investigation is ongoing and we are working tirelessly to determine the exact circumstances of this tragedy,” he said
A man who remains in a serious condition in hospital following Tuesday’s fatal incident was a member of the same household, the PSNI said at the weekend.
