A man in his 80s has died following a road traffic collision involving two cars in Co Cavan.

The crash occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning at around 12.40am, on the N55 at Clarebane, roughly 5km from Cavan town.

The deceased man, driver of one of the cars involved, was pronounced dead at the scene. The four occupants of the second car are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Cavan General Hospital.

Gardaí and emergency services attended at the scene. The Garda’s forensics units is carrying out investigations.

Gardaí attached to Cavan Garda station are leading the investigation into the crash, and are appealing for witnesses.

“Gardaí are appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dashcam) who were travelling on the N55 between 12.15am and 12.45am this morning to make this footage available,” a spokesperson said.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Cavan Garda station on 049 4368800, the Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”

Gardaí are also appealing for witnesses after a man aged in his 70s sustained “serious” injuries in a two-vehicle collision in Co Cork on Tuesday evening, Christmas Eve.

The collision occurred on the N28 at Carr’s Hill, south of Cork City, around 7.30pm. The man in his 70s was taken from the scene by emergency services to Cork University Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the second car, a woman in her 50s, was also transferred to hospital, although her injuries have been described as non-life-threatening.

A number of road closures are in effect following the crash, as the Garda conduct forensic investigations.

Gardaí at Togher Garda station are appealing to witness of the crash to come forward.

Meanwhile, a man aged in his 30s died in a single-vehicle crash on Tuesday evening in Co Down.

The crash, involving a grey VW polo, occurred on the Downpatrick Road in Ballynahinch at approximately 4.45pm.

Inspector Cherith Adair, attached to the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s (PSNI) Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Police received a report at approximately 4.45pm, that a car had been involved in a collision.

“Officers attended, alongside our colleagues from partner emergency services. Sadly, the driver died at the scene.”

The PSNI is appealing to witnesses of the crash to come forward.
