Gardaí have arrested two people, a man and a woman, after the remains of Stephen Ring, who had been missing for almost two weeks, were discovered in Co Wexford on Sunday.
Mr Ring had been reported missing the week before last and while an investigation was underway in a bid to find him, those efforts were stood down on Sunday when his body was found. The deceased man was last seen alive on Tuesday, October 15th, in Wexford Town.
Mr Ring was dropped off at the entrance of Ard na Dara, Clonard, Wexford, at about 2am on the morning he was last seen alive. His remains were found in a body of water at Carrigfoyle Quarry, which is a popular hiking trails location, just before lunchtime on Sunday.
The discovery of his remains was made at a remote area of Shelmalier Commons, south west of Wexford Town, on Sunday afternoon. The remains have been left in situ, pending the arrival of a pathologist, and the area has been sealed off as a potential crime scene.
“The Garda National Technical Bureau have been notified and a technical examination of the scene is taking place,” Garda Headquarters said in a brief statement.
A man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s were arrested on Sunday and were being questioned at a Co Wexford Garda station. They were being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows for them to be questioned for up to 24 hours without charge.
While gardaí said they were investigating “all of the circumstances” around Mr Ring’s death, foul play is suspected and all of the resources of a homicide inquiry have been committed to the case.
A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Wexford
Garda station, with Garda family liaison officer also assigned to the victim’s family.
