A woman is in a critical condition in Mayo after being found on the side of the road with extensive but unexplained injuries.
The woman, who is in her 50s, was found unconscious on the N5 near Cloggernagh, Islaneady at about 4am on Sunday.
She was taken by ambulance to Mayo University Hopsital where she remains in a serious condition.
“The cause of her injuries is unexplained at this time and the scene is preserved for forensic examination,” the Garda said in a statement. One possibility being examined is the woman was the victim of a hit and run, a source said.

The incident is being investigated by gardaí from Castlebar who are appealing for witness.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Castlebar Garda station on 094 90308200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
In particular, investigators are appealing for motorists with camera footage, including dashcams, to come who were in the area at the time to come forward.
