Two motorcyclists killed in M50 crash as northbound closed for several hours

Two motorcyclists were killed in a Friday afternoon crash on the M50 which led to the northbound lane being closed for several hours.

Gardaí said the incident involved the two men and a truck, the driver of which was unharmed. The motorcyclists, aged in their 50s and 60s, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Forensic Collision Investigators have since concluded a technical examination of the scene.

The M50 northbound was shut down following the collision, resulting in heavy traffic jams across major routes in and out of the city.

Emergency services attended the scene of incident between junction 9 (Red Cow) and junction 7 (Lucan) just before 2pm.

Gardaí appealed to members of the public not to share graphic images of the crash which were circulating on social media and messaging apps.

In statement on the Garda’s Twitter account, it said: “Do not share this material, it is disrespectful to the deceased, their family and friends!”

Gardaí have also appealed to any witnesses to the collision to come forward, especially those with camera footage.

Any witness or road user with video who was travelling on the M50 northbound before junction 9, prior to the road being closed, or any road users who may have passed the scene at the time of the crash, has been asked to contact gardaí at Lucan Garda Station (01 6667300) or any Garda station.

Major traffic jams were reported earlier in the day with tailbacks stretching as far as the M1-M50 roundabout on the north side and Firhouse/Knocklyon at one point.
