Alison Spittle Discovers Hawaii

"Who here has suffered mental illness?" asks Alison Spittle. "Liars," she says, when no hands are raised. She's dressed in a hula skirt, surrounded by inflatable palm trees, sharks and children's lilos, and we're all wearing garlands. From the outside, her show looks like silly fun, but she wants to address mental health. Hawaii is her go-to place when she's looking for a "cool headspace". Spittle seems slightly nervous, and attempts to explain the concept of the show several times, before stopping herself. It detracts from the show slightly. She has no reason to lack confidence in her wit: there are killer one-liners, she's not afraid to go all-in when talking about her own struggles, and she manages to pull some original humour out of it. Her conversational style drives the show along. There are digressions from her main material, but even the tangential anecdotes are highly entertaining. Until September 11th
