Something for the Weekend

John Ford Ireland Film Symposium Tomorrow's Ford at War exhibition in Collins Barracks marks the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, and includes a screening of footage shot by the famous director at the landings.

Events run over the course of the weekend with other screenings and talks taking place at the Savoy theatre, the Gresham Hotel and an open-air screening of his most acclaimed work, The Quiet Man, in Meeting House Square tonight. More information at Johnfordireland.org

The Burren Rocks The five-day festival which runs until Monday celebrates the geological heritage of one of Ireland's most unique natural treasures.

Events include Geosite cycles, a family fun day in Doolin cave tomorrow along with rock-climbing and archery exhibitions for children. Visit the Burren Rocks Facebook page for more information.

Carlow Arts Festival Celebrating its 35th year in existence, Carlow Arts Festival, or Éigse as it is known locally, runs until tomorrow week, June 15th.

Featuring music, theatre, street art and spoken word renditions, events are ongoing at various locations around the town, with today’s Dublin Street Carnival providing the jewel in the crown of the week’s activities with an open air concert and fireworks show. History Festival of Ireland It is Carlow's time to shine this weekend, with the History Festival of Ireland also set to reel in the visitors. The idyllic surrounds of Huntington Castle plays host to more than 50 leading historians from Ireland and abroad including Turtle Bunbury, Martin Mansergh and RTÉ History Show's Myles Dungan.

They will be taking part in historical talks and debates today and tomorrow. Day tickets are available for €22.50 from thehistoryfestivalofireland.ie

Dingle Adventure Race If you are feeling particularly active this weekend, get your runners and cycling Lycras on and head down to Dingle, Co Kerry, for today's gruelling 48km event, which includes courses of biking, hiking, running and kayaking around the Kerry peninsula. There is also a mini-course for beginners. More information at dingleadventurerace. com

Wicklow 200 The 33rd instalment of the Wicklow 200 gets under way tomorrow and competitors can choose from either one of the scenic 100 or 200 kilometre routes. Organised by the Irish Veteran Cyclists Association, the event has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Unfortunately registration is now closed, but details of the course are available at wicklow200.ie for anyone who wants to cheer on the intrepid cycling enthusiasts.

Christy Ring, Nicky Rackard and Lory Meagher cup finals, Croke Park It is a huge weekend for GAA action (see Sports for fixtures list), but today sees the Gaelic Games premier venue play host to some of the less traditional hurling counties – as Fermanagh and Longford (Meagher cup), Fingal and Tyrone (Rackard cup) and Kerry and Kildare (Ring cup) battle it out for silverware from 12pm.
