EOIN BUTLER's guide to downloads, singles and free audiostreams
FRANK OCEAN
Pyramids
Def Jam
****
“She’s working at the pyramid tonight,” sings the OFWGKTA vocalist, on this 10-minute RB “event single”. (The Matt Groening-inspired cover art does offer a rather crass hint as to what that might mean. Suffice to say, it isn’t an archaeological reference.) Ocean’s debut album Channel Orange is out next month.
JIMMY FALLON & PAUL McCARTNEY
Scrambled Eggs
Warner
**
The former Beatle has long admitted that Yesterday’s naff original lyric went “Scrambled eggs / oh my baby how I love your legs.” Decades later, that original vision is fleshed out, with a little help from late night comedian Jimmy Fallon (below). (“Waffle fries / oh my darling how I love your thighs”) Fallon’s Blow Your Pants Off compilation includes collaborations with Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder and Justin Timberlake.
MAX HARRIS
High
***
Max Harris is a burly Scottish school boy with designs, apparently, on becoming the next Rihanna. He’s been called “deluded” and “the British Rebecca Black”. But watching him studiously avoid open spaces in this homemade viral vid, I would deduct that he is no stranger to the lash of the bullies taunt. There’s nothing wrong with doing things your own way, Max. More power to you.
GRIZZLY BEAR
Sleeping Ute
****
Warp
The opening track from the Brooklyn indie rockers as-yet untitled fourth album is an intriguing taste of things to come. Grizzly Bear play the Electric Picnic on August 31st.
MUMBLIN DEAF RO
Sister Ill, Better Now
Popical Island
***
From the latest Popical Island compilation, Sister Ill, Better Now is a thoughtful song that explores (in the singer’s words) “the unspoken pact that develops between siblings, after their parents are gone, to worry about each other now”.
Mumblin Deaf Ro’s third album, Dictionary Crimes, is promised in September.
