Artist: Murray Allen & Carrington
Genre: Jazz
Label: Motéma/Membran

Although the alliance of saxophonist David Murray, pianist Geri Allen and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington is as holy a trinity as mainstream US jazz can conjure, the title of this “super” trio’s debut recording is not presumption but a respectful bow to saxophonist Ornette Coleman.

The passing of the wayward pioneer of free jazz just a week before this recording session gives added poignancy to the trio’s performance, and the muscular set is suffused with a connection to the spirit of the great saxophonist.

The title track is a never-recorded Coleman melody handed down to Murray, and the connection is made all the more tangible by guest appearances from former Coleman associates, bassist Charnett Moffett, trombonist Craig Harris and trumpeter Wallace Roney. Not perfect, but not far off.
