You can't help but notice the beautiful warmth at the heart of the second album from Dominic Maker and Kai Campos. Their debut, Crooks & Lovers, offered atmospheric, emotional and neo-classical symphonies by way of the bassbins, but the new work is a much more freeranging affair with traditional songwriting rather than sculpted soundscapes to the fore. You can put this down to a desire to change rather than follow the same trajectory, with the duo leaving the post-dubstep trappings behind and adding fizz, colour and layers to their sound. It often works, as is evidenced by gangbusters such as Made to Stray, an offkilter pop odyssey with inventive, wonky, woozy beats, and the collaborations with King Krule, You Took Your Time and Meter Pale Tone. Let's hope their next steps are just as intriguing. mountkimbie.com
