Dublin’s best-known Battle of the Bands competition, the King Kong Club, is celebrating its fifth birthday by offering up-and-coming musicians a juicy prize. The winning act will win nine days’ recording time with rockabilly legend Boz Boorer at his Serra Vista Studios in Portugal’s Algarve.
Boorer has played guitar with the likes of Adam Ant and Edwyn Collins, and has been a member of Morrissey’s band since 1991.
"I'm really looking forward to working with the King Kong Club winners, as the talent in Ireland is so good at the moment," Boorer told The Ticket. "The relaxed atmosphere around the studio and farmhouse itself sets it up perfectly for a killer session."
The prize includes free flights and transfers to the complex, where the winners will have full access to the amenities, as well as Boz’s range of vintage guitars, drum kits and amps.
Originally in the Pravda bar, the King Kong Club now takes place in The Village on Wexford Street every Monday evening. Promoter John Brereton said that the club, which is free, has been successful because it’s accessible to both musicians and fans alike.
Audience participation is especially crucial, as the weekly winner is decided by the home-made “clap-o- meter”.
