Artist: Julia Holter
Genre: Alternative
Label: Domino

Following up 2013's wonderful Loud City Song is no easy task for Julia Holter, but the Los Angeles musician makes a decent fist of it on her fourth record.

Holter has been difficult to classify in the past, and remains steadfastly so here; Feel You's quirky rhythms lurch through chamber-pop and Afrobeat, while sultry piano ballad Betsy on the Roof sounds like Lana Del Rey in a parallel universe.

There is jazz improv on Vasquez and a glittering harp builds to an intense full-band climax on the wonderfully weird and hugely evocative Lucette Stranded on the Island.

With each song an epic journey packaged into four unpredictable minutes, Holter proves herself a songwriter who likes to keep her listeners guessing. juliashammasholter.com
