Into It. Over It. – Standards review: confusing blend of sounds that adds up to some drab indie-rock

A former punk/emo musician who's turned his hand to folkier, more laid-back fare under a solo guise? We've been here before with acts like City and Color, but the endeavours of Evan Weiss, the Chicagoan behind Into It. Over It., aren't quite as convincing as Dallas Green's.

His third album was written in a remote Vermont cabin, but the only Bon Iver-esque parallels here are with the slow, languid pace of acoustic-led songs like Open Casket and Your Lasting Image. Elsewhere, Weiss suddenly reverts to his emo past, with the chorus of Required Reading roaring into life and the soft/loud dynamic of Closing Argument providing one of the few attention-grabbing moments on the tracklisting.

It makes for a confusing blend of sounds that generally adds up to some pretty drab indie-rock.
