Electric Picnic: Bonnie Tyler - Total eclipse from the start

The festival gods love irony. When power balladeer Bonnie Tyler arrived to Electric Ireland’s Powerhouse an hour later than expected, the electricity failed. A total eclipse from the start. With some fans holding out for their hero for two hours, spilling out far beyond the modest venue, this threatened to be a disaster.

Still, torch songs are not easily extinguished. Tyler’s voice is an earthy instrument, a pit of emotion, and the crowd bestow her with the greatest festival honour: to drown her out with their own singing. They know every chorus, but most just found out that the songs have verses.

It would be worth listening: between gloriously immodest showbiz anecdotes, Tyler cannily mingles old hits, new songs and cover versions. But it’s all about one song. “I don’t know what to do, I’m always in the dark...” In this powder keg she’s still giving off sparks.

In three words: Heart of darkness
