There is plenty of colour in Georgia Barnes’s back-pages, and the future looks equally bright.

A former footballer with QPR and Arsenal, her family ties (dad is Leftfield’s Neil Barnes) meant Georgia has been in a studio since she was a nipper, while her drumming skills attracted gigs with Kate Tempest and Kwes.

This debut album is gorgeous, full of smart, punky, edgy and very modern pop songs and sounds, with a big emphasis on crafting magnetic, percussive highs.

You can see influences writ large (there are nods to M.I.A. on Systems, while Nothing Solutions has shades of Fever Ray and The Knife), but you can also sense Barnes preparing to erase such demarcation lines in future outings.

Be it her ease with extra-large gnarly grooves (Kombine) and sparse, tender introspection (Heart Wrecking Animals), it's clear Barnes will be around for a while.
