Electronic music producer Nicolas Jaar says that working with jazz bassist-turned-guitarist Dave Harrington allowed him to make a rock'n'roll record. In terms of what Jaar has previously done (such as Space Is Only Noise), Psychic definitely swings in a much different way, with its blend of electronic tones, bluesy drones, cosmic guitars and sci-fi wobbles. Like Darkside's recent re-imagining of Daft Punk's Random Access Memories, Psychic is about plotting a route and a reveal through the most eclectic of ingredients in a way that draws the pair closer rather than pushes them apart. Both musicians are sussed and smart enough to realise that collaboration requires give and take, so there's a lovely resonance between Jaar's slo-mo electronic whirls and Harrington's guitarcraft on Golden Arrow, Freak, Go Home and Metatron. A hugely engrossing and highly enjoyable trip to the far side. facebook.com/DarksideUSA
