North meets south in Italian pianist Claudio Filippini's trio, with eminent Scandinavians, bassist Palle Danielsson and drummer Olavi Louhivouri laying down some rugged Nordic grooves under the leader's heart-on-his-sleeve romantic- ism. Danielsson in particular is a direct link to the Keith Jarrett quartet in the 1970s, to which Filippini has clearly listened intently. In these days of furious, often wreckless charging into the artistic unknown, the Italian's "inside" playing, with singing melodies and rich diatonic harmonies, will be balm to some exhausted ears. It will be too sweet for others, who may say it has all been done before, but for the romantically inclined, that's no reason no to do it again, particularly if it's done this well. camjazz.com
