The queen of Trinidadian carnival is 76 years old, has survived abuse, cancer and two heart attacks, but remains as energetic and feisty as ever – “They say I reign too long, forgetting my constitution is strong”.
And reign she does, ever since her struggle to receive her rightful award in the male-dominated Calypso carnival competition – “no man alive or dead could take the crown off my head”. This is calypso for the dancefloor with none other than Manu Chao adding an infectious sparkle to proceedings. Yet the traditional sharp social comment remains, with stories of domestic violence and women’s rights concealed amongst the party fare.
From the brassy ska of the title track to the propulsive soca of Trouble, this will add an exuberant summery bounce to your next barbecue.
