Since Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore's separation and Sonic Youth's subsequent hiatus in 2011, all four long-term members have thrown themselves into other projects of varying timbre. Moore's new band (Chelsea Light Moving) sounds like a man cutting loose and having some rock and roll fun; this collaboration between Gordon and guitarist Bill Nace is an altogether knottier proposition. Body/Head heralds a return to Gordon's no-wave roots. Coming Apart is 68 minutes of discordant guitar noise, barely sung vocals and an oppressive, emotionally wracked atmosphere. As the title suggests, the end of Gordon's 27-year marriage casts a long shadow. There are moments, such as Last Mistress and a cover of folk standard Black Is the Colour (Of My True Love's Hair), of compellingly dark juju. But don't expect a Tunic or a Kool Thing: Coming Apart is for Gordon fans and noise connoisseurs only. bodyheadmusic.com
